Can termites make me sick?

A reader e-mailed in this question:

"I am living in an older apartment in Hallandale, FL and know that I have a termite problem and am working with the management for remedy.   My question is:  Can termites carry or spread disease?"
No, termites do not spread diseases to people.

They are even eaten as a delicacy in parts of Africa. There are some inside the colony that could technically bite you, but they don't insert venom (so it's not dangerous) and you're not likely to really encounter those kinds of termites directly.

Most people only actually see the swarmers, which fly around and aggravate you, but don't actually harm people.
